FUNCTIONAL TRAINING EXERCISES, PROGRAMS, WORKOUTS
LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP AND ENHANCE YOUR MOVEMENT CAPABILITIES
The purpose of functional training exercises is to improve performance. Therefore, all training that improves performance is by definition functional. Functional training should be used for all populations, regardless of performance needs because it will improve your movement capabilities and will give you strength that you can use. Functional Training will show you how to build muscles correctly, help reduce your body fat, increase your lean muscle mass, burn calories more efficiently, and boost your stamina for improved fitness.
"THE BODY IS DESIGNED FOR MOVEMENT!"
Stand back and observe the wonderful construction of the human body for a moment. It has a master design that reveals multiple capabilities. Taking a strength development from a movement and skill perspective rather than the perspective of isolated muscle training develops neuromuscular efficiency (the body's ability to move efficiently as an integrated unit). Optimal functioning reduces injuries and improves performance. It will also make your daily activities easier from carrying groceries to picking up a child. As long as a person stays active, the human body will always be a work in progress and highly adaptable to a variety of conditions and stresses! "Ready to learn more?" HERE WE GO.....
FUNCTIONAL TRAINING 101: "WHAT IS IT?"
"What is Function?"
* A duty or purpose.
"What is Functional?"
* Performing a duty or purpose for which a person or thing is intended for.
The human body is a unit, a kinetic chain, where movement is more than just individual muscles contracting and relaxing. Each link in the kinetic chain has a specific role to play and each link is part of an integrated whole resulting in efficient flowing movement!
A simplified look at the human body would serve as a great starting point to better understand the efficiency of functional training exercises and how they can effectively be applied.
"What is the body's kinetic duty or purpose?"
We need to look at movement from a direct observation and common sense approach. Once we understand the basic characteristics of the human body, looking at its "movement capabilities" becomes rather simple.
"So, what does the human body naturally do?"
Fundamentally, your body recognizes 4 movement characteristics. The human body can stand and locomote on 1 leg and 2 leg base of support, push and pull, level change, and rotate.

STANDING and LOCOMOTION: Holds and linearly displaces the body's center of mass over double or single leg bases of support - (Ex. Activities Like Running, Walking, Side-To-Side Motion, Lunging)

PUSHING and PULLING: Characterized by pulling an object toward the body or pushing an object away from the body - (Ex. Medicine Ball Pushes, Opening or Closing A Door)

LEVEL CHANGES IN THE BODY'S CENTER OF MASS: Characterized by movents of the trunk, the lower body or a combination of the trunk / lower body at the same time - (Ex. Picking Up A Child, Lunging, Up or Down stairs)

ROTATION Characterized by changes in direction and rotational torgue production - (Ex. Swing of a baseball bat or chopping wood)
FUNCTIONAL TRAINING CAN BE AN UNSURPASSED QUALITY OF LIFE TOOL
If you really want to improve your movement capabilities for sport or just general everyday life activities, you will need to have a movement approach (functional training philosophy) to program design. No doubt, functional exercises should be used for all populations, regardless of performance needs. If you personally choose to incorporate them, success will be optimal! All the strength in the world is of little value if you can't use it. So..., DEVELOP STRENGTH YOU CAN USE TO FUNCTION!
Summary
"What Is Functional Training?"
* Training that optimally enhances the body's kinetic duty or purpose and provides significant transfer to target activity
*Training that familiarizes the body with its operational environment. Using gravity, momentum, ground reaction forces and 360 degree movement freedom to make movement more efficient.
"What Makes A Movement Functional?"
* Its relationship to the targeted activity!
"WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL TRAINING DO?"
Increases inter and intramuscular coordination
* Reduces inhibitory responses
* Increases neuromuscular efficiency of movement (enhanced coordination)
* Allows you to use more of the strength you already have
* Increases joint integrity and stability
* Transfers greater forces across joints
